Construction mishap leads to emergency response; no injuries reported |
On Tuesday morning, the Columbia Fire Department swiftly responded to a gas line rupture on the 300 block of North Briegel Street.
Construction workers inadvertently struck the line shortly before 9:45 a.m., prompting immediate action from emergency services.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Ameren, the local utility provider, was promptly dispatched to the scene to address the situation.
Gas line incidents have been a recurring concern in Columbia.
In November 2023, the Columbia Fire Department ordered a halt to all operations by a fiber optic internet company after multiple gas leaks were reported in the Elmwood Park neighborhood.
These leaks were caused by the company's subcontractors during cable installation.
Similarly, in August 2020, a natural gas line was cut on Huger Street, leading to road closures and traffic disruptions.
These incidents underscore the importance of stringent safety measures during construction activities to prevent such hazardous occurrences.
Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any signs of gas leaks, such as the smell of natural gas or hissing sounds, to authorities immediately.
Ensuring public safety remains a top priority for the Columbia Fire Department and local utility companies. |
