Community Pushes for Tradition Amid Proposed Regulation Changes |
Southern Illinois hunters are actively advocating for the continuation of duck hunting during the Christmas holiday, following proposed changes by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) that could disrupt this longstanding tradition.
In response to the 2026-2030 waterfowl season dates, which notably exclude the Christmas period, local hunters have voiced significant concerns. State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville has been at the forefront, emphasizing the importance of these traditions to families in the region.
"I know so many families throughout Southern Illinois that enjoy hunting waterfowl over Christmas and have done so for many, many years," Meier stated. "Families throughout the region should be able to carry on their hunting traditions."
The IDNR has acknowledged the oversight, admitting they were unaware of the significance of Christmas hunting in the South Zone, which encompasses areas south of Interstate 70, including parts of the metro-east. "We now understand this to be critically important to many hunters in this area," the agency noted.
To address these concerns, the IDNR plans to host public meetings in November across Southern Illinois, providing a platform for hunters to express their views and influence potential adjustments to the proposed regulations.
As the 2025 season approaches, duck hunting remains permitted during the Christmas holiday. However, the community remains vigilant, striving to ensure that future regulations honor and preserve their cherished traditions. |
